It gives us immense pleasure to announce that all the countries in the world except Eastern Russia will be able to celebrate Eid al Fitr 2020 on the same day, on Sunday, 24th May 2020, Insha Allah! This rare event is possible due to the visibility conditions of the crescent on 23rd May 2020.
The Shawwal 1441 new moon will be born very late on Friday, May 22, 2020 at 17:38 UTC. Hence, there are no chances of crescent visibility on the evening of May 22, 2020 in any part of the world.
We now invite you to take a look at the visibility curve of May 23rd for Shawwal 1441. It is evident from the curve that most of the North American continent (except some parts in the North) is either in the Green zone or the Blue zone. The same applies to the African continent. That means, direct visibility of the crescent will be possible in the countries on these two continents. The new moon will be sighted in the North and African continents well before the time for Fajr in most other countries in the world (mainly countries belonging to Asia, Europe and Oceania except Eastern Russia). Thus these countries will also be able to celebrate Eid-al-Fitr, on the same day, 24th May 2020, Insha Allah! Indeed, a rare event! As for Eastern Russia, no celebration of Eid is possible before Monday 25th May, because of the starting date of Ramadan.
Please note that visibility is acquired either through direct sighting or via our concept of the extension of the visibility zone (link). To get more details about our date calculation methodology, we request you to read our introduction to the Islamic Calendar.
We also request you to read our Ramadan 2020 announcement to visualize the live reports of crescent sighting we provided at the beginning of Ramadan. In a similar fashion, we will publish Eid al-Fitr 2020 (Shawwal 1441) live moon sighting reports on this page. We invite you to visit our site on 23rd May to get the latest updates about the crescent sighting.
We have released country specific Islamic calendars for the Gregorian year 2021 and country specific Hijri Calendar for the year 1442. On May 23, from sunset 18:57 Local Time onward until 19:15, I tried very hard with binoculers to sight the crescent, which this time was at almost the apogee. Not only were planets Mercury and Venus invisible, the crescent too remained so. The moon set at 19:36, so it was no use observing it until so late. The azimuth and altitudes I scanned were: 290 degrees, and from the horizon upwards to 15 degrees. The sky was not perfectly clear, and due to the recent partial unlocking of COVID-19 restrictions, the pollution due to vehicular traffic played its part in creating a dusty horizon. Hence, the SHAWWAAL 1441 crescent was NOT SIGHTED. Source: Moonsighting
